LATEST UPDATE: Instagram has introduced a new feed layout update for 2022.

The platform is currently rolling out this new update and it is sure to change the face of Instagram for businesses, individuals and marketers who promote their business, brand, products and services on the platform.

What is the new Instagram feed update?

The home feed now features videos and photos in a taller format (9:16 ratio), making use of the full screen.

Images and graphics that are not sized correctly for the new Instagram format will have a blurred background around all posts.

Instagram wants to create a more immersive experience for its users, and it is similar to other video-based social media platforms such as TikTok.

With the introduction of YouTube Shorts by Google and the success of TikTok in recent years, video content is becoming more and more of a priority on social media.

This new update will also be used by Instagram to learn how users interact on their mobile devices and whether a full-screen experience is better than the original, traditional feed feel.

What has stayed the same?

Users can still access the discovery tab, Instagram Reels, shopping and their own account by using the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen.

It is still possible to see notifications in the top bar.

Stories are featured at the top of the screen as before. However, there has been talk that Instagram stories are changing too!

The rise of video content

This new change comes at a time when video content is booming. Currently, Instagram has over 2 billion monthly active users, and 91% of these users watch videos weekly.

It is becoming more and more important for businesses and brands to develop a video marketing strategy, which will have a serious impact on small businesses.

The days of simply reaching out to people using images or text are over.

Now, companies need to create new video content that engages users constantly.

These videos only last a matter of seconds on Instagram, and it can be challenging for smaller companies to keep up with the demand.

This new feed allows users to flick through videos and image posts without a second glance, creating an immersive but fast-paced social media experience that may have a negative effect on small business engagement.

How will the new Instagram update affect marketing?

It is essential to stay on top of social media updates and find key ways to improve engagement in the wake of new formats and ideas.

Instagram has seen an 80% increase in the time users spend watching video content, and over 500 million accounts view stories daily.

This new update is geared towards prioritising video content over images and text, meaning our marketing strategies need to be geared towards this.

The future of social media is video!
